Gallery Wall Update

HOME, HOME + LIFESTYLE, CRAFTS, DIYlissa-anglinComment

Lucy has been home for almost 2 YEARS now- and guess which professional photographer has ZERO framed prints of her newest daughter in her home?! Yep. This one. What’s the saying? The cobbler’s children have no shoes? It’s like that at our house, unfortunately.

Realizing the great need for her sweet face to adorn our walls, I was also feeling all cluttered and anxious about the current state of our living room/dining room gallery wall:

Yes, that is the infamous man lamp. He’s been in the family for years, and he has now relocated to my desk.

Anyway, it was high time for a change. I wanted a simpler gallery wall look and imagined large frames with large white mats. So, my first step was calling up my friend Lauren for some new family photos. Lauren did her MAGIC (seriously, she is magic) in about 10 minutes and the kids were rewarded with giant chocolate bars. I love the photos from this session so much, I’ll have to share them in another post.

If you’d rather watch the video version of this post, feel free to scroll on down!

After measuring the wall and deciding how large I wanted my frames to be, I did a little mock up in Photoshop. I knew I wanted an oversized, floor-to-ceiling look, so I measured the wall and did the maximum size I could.

Wouldn’t that completely cover the wall again?! Yes, but the reason this works from a design standpoint is because the large mats and skinny frames don’t require a lot of visual space.

Tip: If you are wanting to recreate this look, it’s very important that you measure your wall space, and use skinny frames close together (mine were 2 inches apart) with large neutral colored mats.

I originally thought I would do black and white, but that was vetoed by everyone else in the family, and also thought I could fit 8 frames in instead of 6…math was never my forte. It did help me plan and visualize, though!

After a LOT of shopping around, I ended up with these frames from Michael’s. They are technically poster frames, which makes them less expensive, and have plastic instead of glass.

When I first hung up the frames, I was a bit disappointed that you could see the slight bending of the plastic when the light glared on them (revealing that they aren’t truly glass)- this is a little thing that my perfectionist self wanted to fix immediately- but after thinking a bit, the plastic is really a better choice for our family right now- especially since these frames sit lower to the ground.

You can see the bending glare a bit in the above photos.

I ordered these prints from Sam’s Club, of all places! They were having a sale and though I typically recommend mpix.com, I thought it was cheap enough to give it a shot. In the end, I was pretty happy with the way they turned out. I was able to pick them up in 24 hours. They were delivered rolled up, so I flattened them out and put them under a weighted piece of artboard for a couple of days to make them easier to frame.

My frames are 24x36'“, and I ordered 16x20” prints. I thought I would just order custom mats for the frames, since that is an irregular mat size, but Michael’s was going to charge me $38.00 per frame! So, I was super excited when I found FrameItEasy.com. I was able to order exactly what I needed for around $10 per mat.

The mats fit perfectly and were great quality. I also love that they do framing, and will probably be ordering all-out framed prints from them next time.

I used regular ‘ol masking tape to tape the prints to the back of the mats. I realize this is a no-no in the photography world, as it’s not archival quality and the chemicals in the tape will cause the prints to break down over time, yada, yada, yada….but let’s be real, I’m going to change these prints again before anything like that starts happening.

Once it was time to hang, I began with the center two prints and worked outward, using a level to make sure the lines were all straight. I’m not going to lie- these frames are a total pain to hang with the tiny sawtooth hanger (I MUCH prefer wire across the back), but you only have to do it once. :)

Tip: Even after I had then all hung, they still tilted a bit one way or the other, so I attached velcro command strips to the backs of the frames and onto the walls, which keeps them straight (and in place when a kid decides to ram into one- we have a rambunctious crew, ya’ll).

In the end, I was super pleased with how it turned out! The frames are semi-obstructed by the couch in our living room, but all visible from the dining/kitchen area.

Zaya Rae's 1 Year Session

PHOTOGRAPHYlissa-anglinComment

This little miss turned 1 year old a few weeks ago and I was excited to photograph her. It is always amazing to see how kids' personalities grow and develop in that first year- and Zaya Rae reminds me of my Liv- sweet and spicy all in one. :)

She had a Hawaiian themed birthday party and I loved the onesie her momma got from Baby Squishy Cheeks and the adorable felt flower crown from Fancy Free Finery. And of course, we had to get big brother Shaddix in on the action- he has grown so much as well!

We ended the shoot with some ice cream at Holly Hop Ice Cream Shop here in Lubbock- it was the perfect spot to celebrate this little one!

my 2011 in review, and a contest!

One thing that I have learned running my own business is that I LOVE closure. Like, really love it. Nothing excites me more than to see all the loose ends tied up and wrapped into a pretty package.

I've come to realize, though, that life is messy. And I'm beginning to appreciate that just the same.

I decided to do a little looking back, mostly for my sake. But I'm posting it here as well- maybe it will give you some insight as to what goes on behind the scenes. :) Here are my 2011 Accomplishments and Struggles.

Struggles/To-Do List

• Invest in clients more- cultivate an EXCELLENT experience.

• Further define my artistic style- what I do and do not do, push my creative boundaries more.

• More focused efficiency in my workflow.

• Seek God's purpose for my little business. Nothing happens by accident.

• Keep up with friends better. Be intentional. Be available.

• Nail down a new RAW workflow. (Until now I've shot in JPG exclusively- and I'm thinking it's time to make the switch)

• Monthly Lissa Likes posts. They kind of stopped when Knox came along. :)

Accomplishments

• Had a baby! Kept him alive and happy. :) Of course, I had a LOT of help from parents, friends, and these two- my little sister, Layne, and my intern, Casi. Thank you all for helping me with the biggest and best accomplishment of my life so far!

• Kept my business afloat and flourishing while being a Mom. This I was super nervous about. I worried about it for pretty much the entire 9 months I was pregnant. Of course, this too would not have been possible without the help of the people mentioned above.

• Was featured in The Knot Texas and on the blog One Stylish Bride.

• Took a big leap of faith with Shawn's job- more on this later!

• Stayed out of debt!

• Started to work with the youth at our church.

• Grew our marriage. A friend's Mom once told us that couples in a healthy marriage need to date weekly, retreat monthly, and vacation yearly. I think we have accomplished this almost 100%.

• Was featured as Forbeyon's photographer of the month

• Shot 20 weddings and 94 portrait sessions. 15 of the 20 brides already have their wedding album in their hands, which is something that's been super important for me.

And now, for a contest!

How many images have I shot in the year 2011, total?

Write your guess in a comment below! The winner will get a $15 iTunes gift card and will be the one that guesses the number, or is the closest without going over. Contest ends Wednesday at noon!

Lissa Likes #1

lissa-anglin2 Comments

I've decided to add a new feature to my little blog- it's called "Lissa Likes"! Basically, it's just a gathering of pretty, nice things that have been catching my eye lately. It could also include anything I've been appreciative as of late. Hope you enjoy this little insight into my world!

I've got a vast array of things to "like" today- topping off the list with

1. Shotguns. Really. I am not kidding. Our home security system went off this morning about 5:00 a.m., and it was the first thing I thought about- that and the husband that was suddenly carrying it around the house, hoping not to find any intruders. Thankfully, it was a false alarm- the door to our garage had gone ajar- juuuust enough to set the house into hysterics. Needless to say, I am a little sleepy today and very thankful for my "backup" security system.

2. Salt and Espresso. Together. Call it a pregnancy craving, but nothing has satisfied my tummy lately like a little coffee (preferably cold, and usually decaf) paired with some greasy french fries. I know this romance will end in a few short months, but until then, I'm indulging like never before.

3. Friends that give like no one else. It seems like lately I have been so blessed with friends that have chosen to give their used baby things, time, and sympathy (when my main computer completely crashed a few weeks ago). I know that a computer is just a piece of equipment, but when you spend as much time on it as I do (my job is 90% computer, 10% shooting), it sure is nice to have someone genuinely care about the situation.  Baby Knox is also accumulating a lot of wonderful things passed down from friends and family that I am getting so excited to use! The thoughtfulness of others amazes me.

4. Cardboard Safari. The moment I saw some of these at a little shop in Taos a few months ago, I knew we had to get one for the baby room. Maybe I knew it was a boy even then! We are leaning toward the Rhino in the natural brown, but I do like the way this white contrasts against the dark wall.

5. New Music. Having my intern Taylor around has opened my eyes to lots of new sounds lately. My summer playlist has consisted mostly of Phoenix, Parachute, MGMT, The Classic Crime, Christy Nockles and some random ones like Peter, Bjorn and John and Almost Alice, the "Alice in Wonderland" soundtrack.

6. New Videos. The OKGO video was shared with me by Alex M. and Taylor showed me the T-Shirt Wars stop motion. Pretty cool!

7. Fall! This is quickly becoming my favorite season. Pumpkin spice lattes, that crisp smell in the air, getting to wear scarves and hats- I love it! Of course, it always inspires new knitting projects- even more so since I discovered Ravelry. I've already got a head start on Christmas gifts! It's also my favorite time to shoot- the leaves are changing, and although I miss those extended hours of summer sunlight, I can't get enough of those warm yellows and oranges from the trees this time of year. Here is an image from Michelle and Edgar's wedding last November.

8. Voluspa Candles. If you're here in Lubbock, you can get them at Chrome. I haven't found one yet that I didn't love. Right now I'm burning Makassar Ebony & Peach. Yum. I'm convinced somehow they make me a better photographer. Or maybe just a little happier to be sitting at a desk.

Hope you enjoyed the first edition of Lissa Likes!

I think I was excited the entire week before Taylor's session. We had talked about TOMS, vintage cameras, and an old, broken-down building. Plus, I knew Taylor was going to be a great subject!

It was incredibly windy the day of her session (suprise!), but we rolled with it. It actually made for some seriously good supermodel hair.

Taylor took me out to this crazy old apartment building where they must have been challenged to use as many paint colors as possible. Tons of texture, light, and color- I was in Heaven!

I'm sure there is some photographer-induced camera tilt to the image on the right, but don't be fooled- the building was actually leaning!

One of her many talents is photography. You have got to check out her Flickr photostream. Super creative- I love it!

Many thanks to Shanna for making my lighting 2x better, and playing stylist at the same time!

How does everyone like my new *BIG* pictures? I feel like I can breathe easier now.
